In June we recognize families and those who help them overcome challenges to remain safely together. CASA volunteers learn during their initial training that it is in the best interest to keep children with their family of origin when it is safe.
In 2023, 40% of child welfare cases with a CASA volunteer in Nebraska were closed because of successful reunification with parents or primary caretakers or children and youth remaining with parents throughout the life of the case. A guiding principle for our national network is the recognition of the importance of family preservation and/or reunification.
CASA programs provide resources to children and families to help them reunify as quickly as safely possible. CASA volunteers work with experts to identify and recommend services and support aimed at keeping families together. CASA helps to find relatives that can care for children when parents cannot, helping to maintain family connections and cultural traditions that can minimize the trauma of family separation and relieve the anxieties that come with traditional foster placements.
