Our mission is simple—join us for impact.

Nebraska CASA Association is a network of 22 local programs in Nebraska serving 55 counties. We recruit, screen, train and support Court Appointed Special Advocates. Those advocates are volunteers - just like you - who are appointed by a judge to speak for the well-being of abused and neglected children.

Nebraska CASA and the Spirit of July 4th

Child enjoying 4th of July

As fireworks light up the Nebraska sky this Fourth of July, we celebrate the spirit of independence – the freedom to make our own choices, pursue our dreams, and live a life filled with opportunity.

It's a concept deeply ingrained in the American identity, a promise enshrined in our nation's founding documents. But for many children in our state, true independence feels like a distant dream, overshadowed by the complexities of the child welfare system.

Celebrating Independence, One Child at a Time

That's where Nebraska CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) steps in, embodying the very values we celebrate on this special day. Just as our forefathers fought for freedom and self-determination, CASA volunteers champion the rights and futures of abused and neglected children. They stand as unwavering advocates, ensuring these vulnerable youth have a voice, a chance, and a path toward genuine independence.

Freeing Foster Children from Abuse and Neglect

This July 4th, let's reflect on the connection between our national ideals and CASA volunteers' profound impact on the lives of abused and neglected children in Nebraska. A CASA volunteer is more than just a mentor; they are a consistent presence in a child's life, a steady hand guiding them through a turbulent system. They get to know the child, their story, hopes, and fears. This deep understanding allows them to effectively advocate for the child's best interests in court, ensuring their needs are heard and considered in every decision.

The impact of a CASA volunteer extends far beyond the courtroom. They are instrumental in promoting a child's sense of self-worth and empowering them to envision a brighter future. They listen to their concerns, validate their feelings, and help them navigate the complexities of their situation. They encourage them to pursue their passions, reminding them that their dreams matter, even amidst hardship.

A Path to Independence for Older Youth

One of the most critical aspects of a CASA volunteer's work is preparing older youth for independent living. As children approach adulthood, the prospect of aging out of the foster care system can be daunting. Without the support of a stable family, they face significant challenges in securing housing, finding employment, and managing their finances.

CASA volunteers play a vital role in equipping these young adults with the skills they need to thrive on their own. They provide practical guidance on everything from budgeting and cooking to job searching and applying for college. They help them develop essential life skills, such as time management, problem-solving, and communication.

Additionally, CASA volunteers offer invaluable emotional support during this transition. They provide a listening ear, offer encouragement, and help youth build a strong support network. They connect them with resources and opportunities to help them achieve their goals. They are a constant source of reassurance, reminding them that they are not alone and that their potential is limitless.

It's Not Enough to Celebrate Our Own Independence

Pursuing freedom is an ongoing endeavor. This Independence Day, let's also work to ensure that all children have the opportunity to achieve their full potential. We can help create a future where every child in Nebraska has a safe, stable, and nurturing environment, where they are empowered to overcome adversity and chart their own course.
