June is National Reunification Month, a time to honor the families who have worked to overcome challenges and reunite with their children, as well as the CASA volunteers and professionals who support them. When safe and possible, reunification with family is in a child’s best interest. As we continue to advocate for the best interests of children and youth, we remain committed to strengthening families through community-based support and reducing unnecessary involvement in the child welfare system.
It is in a child’s best interest to remain with their family of origin when possible and if conditions are safe. We know separation causes trauma and CASA is diligent about helping families find the resources they need to be reunited.
CASA volunteers advocate for children to live with relatives and remain with siblings while in care. If they cannot be placed together, it is equally important for children to maintain contact with their siblings, as well as with their parent(s). We advocate for connecting families with services and support that will help them achieve stability. Older youth have different needs and CASA volunteers receive training to help meet their unique needs. Many resources can be found here. This month we hope you join us in being a part of our community uplifting families to ensure children and youth are safe and reside with the people they love.
